Korean Modelling Masks

A large number of the Sarang Spa facial treatments include a Korean Modelling Mask. This is quite unique to Sarang Spa as many Australian Day Spa / Salons do not use these masks.  These masks started to become popular in Korea over 20 years ago and are a standard procedure used in Korea Skin Care,  however, only are recently as as 2019/2020 started to become popular outside of Asia.  Sometimes these masks are referred to as Rubber Masks.  All Sarang Spa modelling masks both retail and professional treatment are imported directly from our South Korean Supplier (Lindsay & Co).

Why use a Modelling Mask?

Like most forms of face masks the are two primary purposes.  These are to allow for active ingredients to be absorbed and secondly to force moisture into the skin.

Unlike sheet masks which once dry can actually cause moisture to be drawn from the skin,  a modelling mask forms a non-reverse-osmosis occlusive barrier.   What this means is that it results in a one-way flow of product and active ingredients the skin.

Is it Natural or Chemical?

As modelling masks are sometimes referred to rubber masks they are mistakenly thought to contain chemicals to form the thickening / rubber feel.    This is incorrect as the primary ingredient used to thicken the mask is derived from kelp (algae).

What does it feel like?

The first time you a try a modelling mask it can be a strange sensation.  Seconds after the mask is applied you will feel an instant, pleasant cooling sensation.

It is quite common for the mask to be applied over both the eyes and the lips so for some people it can be a little claustrophobic as the mask is a little heaver than a typical sheet mask.   On the first application your therapist will ask if you want your eyes and lips covered.

After the mask is removed your skin looks like it has been hydrated, feels cool, soft, yet moisturised to the touch.  This effect can last many days.

Can I try at home?

Yes!!!

We sell a number of different modelling masks that you can take home and do your own treatments.     They can be a little difficult to apply the first few times.   Certainly don’t expect to have a perfectly applied mask as you see on all the promotional materials.  That takes a lot of practice to get to that level.

However,   don’t be put off by the look of the mask.   As long as you have a good coverage it will work.

Here are my tips to apply modelling masks.

  1. Most masks come with a disposable mixing bowl and small spatula.    I prefer to use a flexible silicon/rubber bowl as it makes it easier to get most of the product.
  2. Work Quickly.  Once the liquid as been introduced to the powder you don’t have long.
  3. Apply in a thick layer using long strokes.    Do not dab!   Long smooth strokes.
If you want to learn how to apply just ask at our reception and one of therapists will be very happy to explain the process.

Never pour any left over down your sink!  It is clog it.    Wait for it to dry and dispose of it in your rubbish bin.
